Construct a Potting Shed

For the gardening aficionado, a potting shed is more of a necessity than a luxury. Potting sheds are used as an additional workspace, their function being more definitive than your average shed.

Whilst the more compact potting sheds are used as a place to store all things gardening related such as pots, tools and bulbs, larger potting sheds will also accommodate a potting bench and somewhere to grow on seedlings and plants.

A potting shed can also become a garden shelter and retreat. For this reason, it’s not uncommon for potting shed owners to also own a normal shed or garage primarily as a storage building.

So functionally, a modern potting shed seems to be a sort of halfway house between a shed and greenhouse, and this is also the case from an aesthetic viewpoint. A potting shed will commonly have a large glazed window on one side to maximise the area that plants and flowers can be grown on. Larger potting sheds may also have two doors at either end.

Choosing a Location for Your Potting ShedBefore you start to construct your potting shed, you should first select the best possible site for it in your garden. The best advice is to find a location that is mostly within a shady area, but avoid deep shade. Try and avoid siting the shed in the shadow of tall trees or buildings, as this can encourage damp and you’ll also need natural light for working in the shed. Remember that south facing potting sheds will receive more natural light throughout the day than a north-facing shed.

The shed should also be located somewhere that’s convenient – if you have a vegetable patch then having your potting shed somewhere between the kitchen and vegetable plot is ideal.

Don’t forget to take into account the soil type in your garden, as although a potting shed is lighter than a ‘normal’ brick-built building, it will still need a solid, level base.

Loamy and sandy soils may need additional structure, such as a layer of hardcore. Clay soils or sites that may waterlog easily would benefit from a layer of gravel to aid drainage. Sloped gardens may need a degree of landscaping (ideally undertaken by a professional) to create a flat, solid and stable site for the shed.

The base can be laid using concrete with damp coursing to avoid rising damp. Other alternatives include concrete paving slabs or perhaps the most ideal solution – stacked concrete blocks topped with damp proof membrane. As most potting shed floors are built with timber, this increases ventilation and avoids problematic damp and wood rot.

Choosing Materials for Your Potting ShedWhether you chose to design and build your own potting shed from scratch, or construct one from a self-assembly kit, you’ll have a choice of materials to choose from. Many affordable potting sheds will be constructed using softwoods such as pine or hemlock.

Slightly pricier, more durable models may be constructed using a naturally decay-resistant wood called red cedar. The most expensive potting sheds will be constructed using extremely robust hardwoods such as oak or birch.

The windows of your potting shed will also be an important consideration. If you decide to install Perspex or Acrylic windows, make sure that the material is UV resistant to avoid discolouration and decay. Doubled glazed windows are an option, as they will be sturdier, shatter resistant and stop any draughts.

If possible, try to choose a window that opens to allow for ventilation in the hotter summer months. This is especially important if you decide to use your potting shed for storing bulbs and compost, which will quickly go off in hot, humid conditions.

Potting Shed SizePotting sheds differ in size, from small compact storage units with shelves that house potting materials and equipment, to larger workshop-sized specimens. A good size is around 10ft by 8ft, as this allows ample space for a potting bench, shelving, storage and a place to grow plants on.

As long as the shed is not closer to a public highway than your house, not more than 10 cubic metres in volume, not less than 5 metres from your house, and no higher than 4 metres with a pitched roof (or 3 metres tall with a flat roof), you shouldn’t need to apply for planning permission. However, if you are in any doubt, give your local planning officer a call to be sure.

An additional consideration is whether you want an American-style overhang on the side of your potting shed. This is somewhere to grow on plants under a shelter, and is really only suited to warmer climates such as the south west of England.

Build Your Own Potting ShedOf course there are almost an infinite number of ways to design your potting shed to suit your tastes and the shed’s surroundings. But the good news is that building a potting shed can be a relatively simple affair.

You’ll need 4 corner posts sunk into concrete, studded walls and floor that can be boarded and clad, installed windows, a pitched roof laid with plywood or other roofing materials such as board and felt shingles or metal, and at least one door. This should be a somewhat easy project for a keen DIY enthusiast to undertake. However, if you intend to install electric lighting and plug points in your shed, you’ll need to get hold of a qualified electrician.

For everyone else, there are a whole host of pre-fabricated self-build potting sheds on offer, or potting shed plans if you’d rather make a few tweaks or source the materials yourself.
Whatever your choice, once your potting shed is constructed you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it!

Beginning With Woodworking Basics

The best place to get this kind of information is the internet. Because of the reach and the affordability that the internet offers, many experts from multiple disciplines have now chosen it over conventional communication media such as print. Storage Sheds – The Un

Vinyl has the advantage of being maintenance free. However vinyl is lower on the visual attractiveness scale. Metal sidings include aluminum, which is light and when anodized gives a good look and lasts a long time. Steel sidings, though cheap, should be avoided as they rust easily. Metal sidings have the least appealing look. Vinyl coated steel has a long life and gives good strength. Rubbermaid and poly vinyl chloride sidings are maintenance free, requiring no painting, no rust treatment and no rot or pest treatment. One thing that should be looked into while selecting siding material is that the siding material should match with the main building siding material. A different siding material may give a contrasting look to the storage shed.

Do It Yourself Kits Vs Professional Installation

Storage sheds can be professionally installed as well as self assembled. Usually for easy assembly, the parts are numbered in self-assembly type storage shed kits. Also assembly instructions are provided with storage-shed kits. Self-assembly may save money and can be a satisfying though difficult experience.

Sizes & Accessories

The usual sizes of storage sheds are, 12′ X 24′, 12′ X 30′, 12′ X 10′, 10′ X 14′, 10′ X 8′, 8′ X 6′ etc. It is better to opt for a double door. For those who want to keep light engineering machines, a good foundation is necessary. Other accessories that come with storage sheds are windows, shutters, weathervanes etc. Hooks and shelves increase the capacity of the storage shed by utilizing vertical space. The windows should be so designed that they match with the main building.

Building Codes and Laws

In various states there are laws on sheds like zoning ordinance, building codes, deed restrictions, building permits, siding materials etc. It is prudent to go through these before installing a storage shed.

Storage sheds are available in various shapes, colors, patterns and sizes. They can be customized to suit an individual’s taste. Smaller sheds are called tool sheds. Larger sheds called barns are used to house vehicles, boats and other large items. The prices range from $300 to $4000 depending upon size, material and accessories in the storage shed.

Garden Shed Plans – Need Help Choosing a Plan? Consider These 5 Factors

Choosing Garden Shed Plans!Flickr: geocam20000
There are many different kinds of garden shed plans to select from and being able to find one that meets your own needs shouldn’t prove to be too difficult. But it is important that you don’t just rush into buying any old plans for a garden shed, you see there are a number of factors that you need to take into consideration first.

The types of things that will need to be taken into consideration is what you intend to use the shed for, the materials it will be made from, the foundations on which it will be laid, and what your budget is for building it. How much you can afford to spend is what will really determine what sort of garden shed you can build. Once you figure this out you can then choose a set of garden shed plans that corresponds to what you want to build.

In this article, we look more closely at the factors mentioned above and that you will find useful in helping you to determine which of the many garden shed plans available is going to be the right one for you.

1. Which Materials Should The Shed Be Constructed From?
Most people prefer that their garden sheds are made from wood, however, you need to remember that once built they will need to be cared for properly. This means that each year you will need to inspect your shed thoroughly to ensure that there has been no damaged caused to not just the sides, but the roof as well. If any damage has been done then repairs must be made immediately otherwise they will become much worse and eventually the shed will need to be completely replaced.

Therefore, if you happen to be someone who doesn’t have the time or money to maintain a wooden shed you would be better off making yours from metal or vinyl. These types of garden shed designs require little or no maintenance. Generally, just washing them down regularly to remove dust or dirt from building up on the surface should be sufficient.

2. What Are You Going To Be Using Your Shed For?
It is what you will be using your shed for that will determine how big or small it should be. When a shed is to be used for storing gardening equipment then it needs to be of a size that not only provides ample space for everything to be stored, but also will allow you to get to everything easily. Most people only need a small 8ft by 6ft shed for this purpose. However, if you have very large pieces of garden equipment that you plan on storing then a large shed with double doors on it is what you probably need.

3. What Should The Foundation Of The Shed Be Constructed From?
If your budget is somewhat restricted when it comes to building a garden shed, making a timber framework should suffice. However, if at all possible, it is far better if you can lay a concrete foundation for your shed. As well as ensuring that the surface on which the base of the shed is placed is even, the concrete foundation will also help to prevent moisture in the ground from seeping up in to the shed floor.

4. What Is Your Budget?
As mentioned above how much you can afford to spend on building your storage shed when looking at garden shed plans is vital. Remember, the bigger the shed then the more materials will be needed and so the costs of erecting it will increase.

5. Do You Need To Seek Planning Permission?
When it comes to you deciding which of the many garden shed plans you like to use, you must find out if you need to get planning permission before you start building it. If you intend to go for garden shed designs where the building measures over 100 sq ft then you need to seek permission from the local planning authority before you begin constructing it. If you don’t check building regulations when building a shed of this size, first, not only could you end up being fined but also be ordered to dismantle the shed as well.

If you have decided that you are going to build your own garden shed then one of the first steps you need to take is selecting a Shed Plan / Blueprint that fits your particular needs. The staff here at PlansforShed.com highly recommends My Shed Plans Elite for all your shed plan and instruction needs. For a limited time only they are giving away a “Garden Shed Plan”, valued at $27.

Easy To Build Lean To Shed Plans -Build A Lean To Shed This Weekend

Easy To Build Lean To Shed Plans -Build A Lean To Shed This Weekend
by Diodorem Mateo

If you are facing the problem of cupboards overflowing, a loft that you cant fit anything more into and a shed that is packed to overflowing, then you are not alone. Just about everyone either wishes for or needs more storage space.

Our family needed more space to keep our firewood. Before the kids came along we used the garage, but soon that space was taken up with bikes, skateboards and other items and it became too small to store all the extra junk we had…it was even getting too difficult to fit the car in! It was definitely time to make more space.

As winter got closer, it became obvious that we desperately needed a place to keep the firewood we would use during these coldest days.

My wife looked at some shed plans online and we both realized that it would be a cheap and easy solution to our problem to constuct a small lean to shed from some plans she found. What I liked most about this lean to shed plan was that it could fit right up against the wall near our back door and I could build it out of similar materials to the house so it looked great. This meant all the firewood wuld be nice and close to the house, right where we needed it most. No more braving the snow and wind to bring in the firewood!

Surprisingly there are lots of different designs for lean to sheds, depending on what purpose you want it for. Some can be built with doors at the front, so you can even store pesticides and garden chemicals without worrying about the kids or pets getting hold of them. There are lean to shed plans for all sorts of purposes, including lean to garden sheds, and even a lean to shed plan for storing house pool or spa chemicals.

I eventually found a simple lean to plan online, which I was easily able to adapt to suit exactly what I wanted. The plan I chose was very easy to follow, and it ensured I didn’t leave out any important parts! For example, because I was building the lean to against the house and not free standing, the plan showed me how I could adapt the structure and still make sure it was strong enough to support the roof and doors, and I also learnt a simple technique that explained to me how to waterproof my lean to shed correctly.

My family thinks the extra storage space we have now is great, I now I can even fit the car in the garage again. I really enjoyed learning how to build a shed plus I saved a lot of money doing it myself. As long as you spend time on the planning and preparation, it’s not difficult building your own shed, and the satisfaction you get from it is very rewarding. My eldest wants a couple of new surfboards next, so I think I might have to build another lean to shed before we run out of room in the garage again!

You’ll find lots of tips on how to build your own shed at shed plans online, including choosing the right location for your shed, what size of shed is right for you and where to get some great shed plans including lean to shed plans

Computer Monitor Riser Woodworking Plans

Ergonomics are changing the way that companies are setting up their offices today. One issue that a number of very tall people face when they are seated at their desks is they have to look downward at their monitor. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen people use strong cardboard boxes, computer manuals and even telephone books under the base of their monitor to raise it up to eye level.

In this set of free woodworking plans, we’ve got a much better solution. We’ve built a beautiful hardwood computer monitor riser that sits under one or two monitors to raise them up over five inches! Additionally, the unit includes two very useful dovetailed drawers that are large enough to hold magazines or papers. You could even use it to raise a television a few inches higher in your living room or bedroom.

To complete these computer monitor riser plans, we used maple for the visible parts of the unit with poplar for the carcase and drawers. However, oak or another desirable hardwood would work well for the exterior, as would pine for the interior parts.

This woodworking project will really show off your skills as a craftsman, and is one you’ll be proud to display for years and years.

3 Sided Horse Barn Designs

Even if you live in a mild climate, your horses require shelter from the weather. A horse shelter also has to withstand the kicks and abuse it takes from horses, so it has to be safe and sturdy. Taking all these factors into consideration, a 3 sided horse barn is the best design which is easy to build and economical. By following good designs, you can make one yourself.

Why go in for it

A 3 sided shelter is especially the way to go if you have limited space. It can shelter your animals even in severe weather conditions. If you have two horses, the ideal size of the barn would be 12 X 24 feet. A panel can be put in the middle to convert the barn into two stalls. You can get designs which help you in making these barns easily.

Inquire about permits

The first thing to be done while building a 3 sided barn with the help of designs is to check with the local authorities if you are allowed to keep horses in your property. Then you would have to find out if a permit is required to build a shelter for them. You would also have to inform your neighbors about your plans.

Location

The location selected should be flat and on high ground. This is so that it will not be prone to flooding or standing water. Water should run away from the shed and not towards it.

You should determine the direction in which the open part of the 3 sided horse shelter would face. In most areas, the north and the west winds are the strongest and hence the back of the building should face this direction.

The type of soil, drainage facilities, access to electricity, water and other utilities and accessibility are other considerations which determine the choice of the location. You would also have to take into consideration any possible future developments.

Height

You would also have to decide on the height of the structure. The height should be such that even a very tall horse should be able to walk in, and not hit the roof even if it throws its head up.

Type of barn

In choosing the most appropriate type from several 3 sided shelter designs, you would consider several things. You would have to consider the kind of horse you would be creating a shelter for. You would also have to consider the kind of riding you normally do. The choice is also determined by whether the horse would spend most of its time in the pasture or in the barn. You would also have to see if you intend to buy more horses in the future.

Size

The above criteria will determine the size of the 3 sided horse shelter. It will also determine the number of stalls you require and the type of utilities.

Floor

As for the floor of the 3 sided barn, concrete is best. This is covered with dirt. This is done because dirt is soft for the horses’ to walk on. Rubber mats may also be put on the concrete before putting the dirt for added protection.

Building a 3 sided horse barn with the help of designs can be a great learning experience and a very satisfying one too. You would be also saving a good deal of money by building it yourself than having it built by experts. However the best part is that you are making a study shelter for your horses, which will go a long way in promoting their health and welfare.

If you have decided to build a 3 sided horse barn yourself, visit http://allin1woodworkingplans.com/
which has got a number of designs from which you can select one which suits your needs.
