Carter Lumber Pole Barn Plans
We are kicking around building a pole barn – actually more correctly a pole garage as we currently don’t have a garage of any kind. I have an 8X16 shed for tools and holiday decorations and a 12X16 shed w/ the tractor, lots of the kids outside toys and yet more holiday decorations.
I’m thinking about building a 30X48X10 pole building. At this point I’ve been in touch with Carter Lumber and they have drawn up plans and since I haven’t purchased anything yet provided me with a material list. It looks like every thing is there I’m just curious if anyone has had them “design” a pole barn for them and if it turned out OK. BTW, we are going to go w/ Vinyl Siding w/ 7/16″ OSB behind it, shingle roof w/ 1/2″ OSB under it, and 2 9X7 garage doors on the 30′ side for the car & truck and eventually a 9X7 or 9X8 garage door on the side for the tractor and implements.
At this point it is going to be just a dirt floor (short on $ maybe next year), but will eventually be concrete. Should I take the topsoil off prior to starting or just wait until I actually get ready to do the floor.
The materials list has a price of $7097 for “everything” including Quikrete for the poles. Corner posts are 6X6 looks like most of the other posts are 4X6.
Has anybody done one based on a design by Carter? I’m doing this myself or with help from friends and family so this will be a slow time consuming process so I will obvisously have plenty of time if I don’t seem something I like in the design that I could change. BTW, depending on the speed and how fast the $ go, this may just be a really large car port that gets enclosed in the future.
Kinda scared haven’t ever done this large of project and winter is coming fast – I know it is August, but I’m slow.
Woodworking vacation #15: in advance of dovetail class with Frank Klauz
Well I made it to Berea today. YEAH! Had no travel troubles this year. The weather was perfect, the can ran well, and no college student tried to introduce himself to me through my back bumper. What more could a girl want?
My brother tells me that I’m not really on a vacation unless it involves a little hiking or a museum trip. So when on my way outside of Nashville and just past the state line I saw a sign for a Shaker Village museum I decided to take a side trip. Round trip it was 100 miles out of my way – but it was so very worth it. For one, I had forgotten how nice it is to drive a car with your windows open for fresh air—- you can’t do that in Fort Worth and still breath well.
This is not something you see much where I live either. We have green – but not this green. The color is so vivid and it goes on for as far as the eye can see.

Also – I’ve not seen one of these since I was a kid.

Regardless of your feelings about tobacco—- it’s nice to see that small farmers are still able to produce and I’m hoping sale their goods.
So I made it to the Shaker Village.

Some of you can see this coming – but I didn’t. It was closed——- imagine that. I did get some shots of the buildings. I’m thinking I may try to go by on my way back home – it’s a pretty large village so I’m thinking there is plenty to see inside.

I finished the trip to Berea and decided I better make a dry run out to the school. This is a shot of the historic Boone Tavern. I’ll have to do a little research to refresh my memory about why it’s historic—- will save that tidbit for later though.

Berea is home to Berea College which I believe is the only tuition free university in the nation. It’s a beautiful campus. As a woodworker though there was one thing I could not pass up taking photos off. This is an old tree stump on the edge of campus. The first snap shows the side that I think looks like a ladies hairstyle

The second snap shows the side that apparently had been used to house a sign of some sort at one time or another.

So now I’m going to do a little resting so I can be ready to go to class in the morning.
Stay tuned for my blog about this class.
– You can’t get a hug from Facebook.

Incense Cedar Lumber
We have stands of incense cedar on both our Oregon and California forest land. From time to time depending on market conditions and harvest management schedules we have varying amounts of incense cedar logs or lumber available.
We can sell whole logs or lumber rough cut to just about any dimension. Also blocks and rounds for crafts and other uses.
Incense cedar grows in the mountains of Oregon into Northern California and down the Sierras into Nevada and even Baja Mexico.
Incense cedar lumber has a creamy white sapwood and a light brown to light reddish brown heartwood. The aromatic heartwood is resistant to decay and has a spicy odor. Incense cedar is light weight and tends to have straight grain. It works well with machines and hand tools, planes or sands to a smooth surface, it holds paint very well and glues and nails well. Some care has to be taken with nails to prevent splitting.
Incense cedar makes attractive lumber that is good for its resistance to decay. Its creamy white sapwood and its dark heartwood are both attractive and when the heart and sap appear in the same boards there can be a nice contrast between the light and dark. Even though it is a soft wood that has a low relative strength it is still strong enough for many construction uses. Its low thermal conductivity makes it a good insulator.
Incense cedar’s unusually straight grain makes it the umber one species for making pencils. Most of the high grade material is used to make pencils and venetian blinds. One of its principal uses is fence posts. Incense cedar lumber is also used for exterior siding, outdoor furniture, trellises, interior panelling, grape stakes, rafters, grave linings, caskets, moth proof closet linings and chests, novelty items, crafts and more.
Incense cedar has its own unique aroma in both its wood and foliage. Cedar boughs are used for Christmas decorations and incense.
We are not cutting any lumber at the moment but please check back later.

Storage Shed Plans with Porch
Without a doubt a really useful addition to your garden is a garden storage shed and by adding a porch you can really make an attractive feature of it. My wife and I recently moved into a new house that had a medium sized garden. I wanted a shed to store my gardening equipment and decided to build my own from plan.
While deciding on the design my wife, a keen amateur gardener, said that she would also like it to double as a potting shed and whilst doing a search online we came across a good set of plans that included a porch.
Before building or buying anything it is important to check that your garden storage shed plans conforms to local building codes and if applicable you may need to consult with the tenants association. By having a good set of plans you can easily demonstrate to these interested parties what it is that you wish to achieve.
Your set of plans will enable you to order everything needed in one shopping trip instead of buying piecemeal. In my case I opted to have all my timber cut to size at the timber yard which in effect gave me a ready to go shed building kit.
Before putting everything together I had to decide on the foundation. As the shed was to be used for storage I decided on a hardcore base which was spread on a heavy polythene mat to stop rising damp. I laid five weather treated beams on top of the polythene and spread the hardcore between them leaving the beams 3 inches above ground level to support the shed and allow it to ‘breathe’.
With a little help from a good neighbour our storage shed complete with porch was built in just one weekend ready for the wife to paint during the week.
By adding a porch to our storage shed we have a potting shed workshop that is not an eyesore in the garden but actually an asset to our property. We are extremely pleased with the result, I have room to store the lawnmower, garden tools etc and I have fitted a workbench for the wife to do her magic with her flowers. On hot days she likes to work outside in the shade of the porch which now boasts two DIY rustic chairs – and I got those from the plans too!
Balsa Wood: Why you might want to use it for Model Building
Uses: Today balsa wood is overwhelmingly used in model aircraft building and in architectural/engineering models of many sorts. In fact it is used in any type of model building where it is important to have a wood that is light and/or easily cut and shaped with hand tools…. in the classroom and the office.
balsa wood for model building–>
Historically, Balsa wood has been used in many applications that required high levels of floatation, life-saving equipment, floats, rafts etc. as well as insulation and in sound absorption applications.
Balsa Tree: Ochroma pyramidale species Balsa is somewhat like what we would consider our poplar trees here in Northern Ontario. It grows like a weed tree. Any time there is an opening in the forest floor, multiple seedlings will shoot up rapidly, often 12′ tall in six months and can reach 15-40″ in diameter in ten years. The strongest tree will eventually dominate an area, killing off the smaller, remaining trees. As the trees age the center core rots and the new wood grows more densely. When the tree is very young the leaves can be as large as 45″ across, but as the tree ages the leaves grow much smaller, in the under 12″ category. Trees are found widely distributed throughout the tropical forests of S. America, from southern Mexico to Brazil and Bolivia. Ecquador is the primary source of commercial Balsa exports.
Wood Description: Balsa is a pale white to gray, nondescript wood, with little grain pattern. It has a distinct velvety feel. It is never bought for its appearance, but rather its exceptional strength to weight characteristics. It is the lightest and softest wood on the commercial market, although not the lightest wood in the world. With a microscope, you would see that the cells are very large and porous, with limited amounts of lignin (the glue that holds wood together) between the cell walls.
Weight: Balsa’s weight is the issue for many balsa purchasers. Its weight can vary from 4 lbs. Per cu.ft. to 20 lbs. Per cu ft., although more typically in the range of 6-14 lbs. It strength is directly related to its weight. Wood that is 6 lbs or less is considered to be of “contest grade” for any of you who are into model airplane construction, and used for low stress components. The heavier stock is for structural components that take more stress. For this reason, many of the larger distributors, always sort and sell Balsa in different weight categories. In the green, Balsa has approximately five times more water, than actual wood, much like our northern white pine.
Finishing: Balsa finishes easily with standard water based paints, or varnishes. May fuzz after first coat and require fine sanding.
Machining: Most cutting and shaping of Balsa is done with very simple hand tools, sanding blocks and X-acto blades. Rarely are power tools necessary unless you are cutting down larger blocks.
DIY Undergravel Filter (UGF) Plans for a Saltwater Aquarium
Undergravel filters are probably the easiest DIY project for an aquarium. There is also the added benefit that you can look at your aquarium and realize that you didn’t just “buy” a filter, you “built it”. In 1989 we built 16 UGF’s for our fish collection business holding tanks using Martin Moe’s Marine Aquarium Handbook as a guide, making changes to fit our needs as we constructed them.
The principle of the UGF is very simple: You want to suspend the filter material (sand/gravel) above the bottom of the tank and draw water down through it. This feeds the nitrifying bacteria which grows in the substrate, which is the biological filter for the aquarium. The substrate also acts as a mechanical filter As the tank water is drawn down through the substrate, it traps the suspended particles, taking them out of the water.
UGF filtration has been a controversial subject amongst aquarists for a long time, so be sure to consider the pro’s and con’s before making the decision to use one.
UGF’s work well when you want a reasonably good filter in a tank that you don’t want a lot of water movement. We have found that UGF filters work very well for raising Clownfish or Seahorse fry. You can use an air stone in the uptake tube to create the water flow down through the filter, or you can use a small powerhead to create a stronger flow through the filter and water movement in the tank.
The UGF illustrated in this DIY project was created for raising newly born Seahorses and uses a small Hagen Aquaclear powerhead both to drive the UGF in the 10 gallon tank and to create a bit of water movement. The parts list is for a 55g tank UGF. You can adjust the amount of PVC and screen to fit the needs of your tank.
Ok, here is what you will need to construct your own UGF filter(s) as we did.
