Backyard Shed Storage
You’ll be surprised to discover that my wife was actually wrong about something. Sorry dear, but the storage areas in the house were just fine. The area you forgot to evaluate when we bought our house was the garage. I am the proud owner of lots of boxes that are piled to the ceiling in my garage. It is definitely time to do something about this mess and clutter. I am planning on some backyard shed storage to fix the issue, but I have too much for a shed.
First order of business is to order a dumpster to deposit all that useless junk that I have been keeping for the last 2 years. I recognize the fact I am notoriously a pack rat by nature. So pitching all the “stuff” I have not used in 2 years is going to make a lot of space in the garage.
One of my must haves for the new shed is that I have access to all the contents in the shed. I am planning on building the shed with doors on both ends. This may pose a problem for some people because they like to back the shed up to the property line. I plan on overcoming this problem by turning my shed sideways on the property, but still have it in the back. This way I will always be only half way to the stuff I may need.
Of course, don’t forget you need to build your shed on level ground and if you make the shed a permanent structure you may want to pull a building permit. A small added expense, but it will be better then having the inspector make you tear the shed down because he didn’t get to inspect it. I have seen it happen; you don’t want to go down that road.
Another space saving tip for your new backyard shed storage is to treat it almost like a garage. What I mean is you can hang those racks from the ceiling of the barn in order to keep stuff up off the floor in your shed. You will have to make sure the ceiling of your shed can support the extra weight. As long as you don’t put engine blocks up on the racks you should be ok. Little common sense goes a long way, just don’t overload the rack and use heavy duty anchor bolts that you have to ratchet in the rafters. You should be ok as long as you follow the manufactures guidelines on the overhead storage.
I believe one of the best investments I have ever made was with backyard shed storage. I can easily get to all my things now. I have plenty of room in my garage for the cars now. I have even installed some cool storage cabinets in the garage. I now have a man cave of sort’s right out my garage door. That will be the topic of a later article though.
