Building a storage shed

A barn garage plan is often used by people wishing to keep horses or other animals. Once you have checked if you have the necessary authorization regarding the keeping of animals in your yard, it is pretty easy to do the conversion.

Replacing the door

The first thing to do is to remove the garage door and replace it with an unglazed window with shutters as well as a wide, single or double sliding door. If the old garage door is still in good condition you can always keep it in case you decide to re-convert your garage later on.

The main reason for removing the normal garage door is to eliminate obstacles as much as possible. If the normal door has glass panes, the horses risk causing damages by kicking in them. If you still decide to keep the existing glazed window panes, protect them by using steel grills. Otherwise horses will inevitably break the glass by poking their nose through it.

Another important aspect is the ease of access to the barn garage plan. The driveway should be practicable, not only for the horses but also for you. It’s reasonable to increase the access door width to about 40″ wide and make it a Dutch door. This has the added advantage of increasing the barn’s ventilation.

Can you have a communicating door between the garage barn and the house? Building regulations often have restrictions regarding the presence of communicating doors between the barn and the house. Ask questions and find out it this is allowed before proceeding with the conversion.

Besides providing for a larger access door, ventilation in the barn garage plan can also be enhanced by placing one or more ceiling fans to help keep the place cool. Many people who have successfully converted their garage to a barn are leaving the garage door open for some time to allow a maximum of air inflow.

Choose the right flooring

The choice of the barn flooring is essential too. It should be insulating the animals against extreme temperatures. Vinyl flooring mats are a very trendy choice right now in this regard. They are easy to clean and fairly durable. Concrete is also a popular option but it tends to be a poor temperature insulator. Finally there are durable, heavy duty-type tiles that are designed to easily bear the animal’s weight.

Another good idea is to put up a kick-wall from the floor up. A 1″ plywood for the lower 4′ of wall would be okay for most of the barn garage. Also consider installing PVC-type portable corral stalls together with rubber mats. Make sure too that your prefab stall have four walls of their own. If you have to use the existing garage walls for stalls, it’s a good idea to cover them with a 2″ lumber to about 7′ up.

Remember the ceiling

Finally, as far as the ceiling is concerned, you need to make sure the garage ceiling is high enough. The ceiling of your barn garage plan can be made of wood, plastic or vinyl.
