Building a storage shed

Hi,

Ok our old garden shed in the corner of our garden (fences to two sides) is near the end of it’s useful life plus without a garage we could use somewhere dry to store all my DIY clobber. Water is getting into the existing shed despite having refelted the roof last year. We knew refelting was just a temporary fix though. We also have a small tool shed which is rotting on the floor because the previous owner didnt jack it up so i’m thinking of ditching that too.

Have thought about buying an off-the-lorry flat packed flimsey B&Q or similar shed…but can’t help thinking i’d get a better built more solid shed and may save some money if i were to build one myself from scratch plus i’m considering a non-standard size too.

The current shed is 8ft long, 4feet wide pent roof shed with door on one of the ends. But there is potentially space for much bigger. At the moment i’m thinking 10 to 11 feet long and 7 to 8 feet wide (probably 7 as else i may have to dig up a small wall!) Can’t make it any longer else it may fall within 5m of the house and be subject to planning permission! http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/eng…315233173.html

I’ve been searching around for plans and so far the best one i’ve come up with is this one : http://www.buildeazy.com/shed_1.html which has a corrugated iron roof. Still need to price out what it’s going to cost and work out what to do about the base. I was thinking of adapting the plans slightly by changing the roofing materials for Wickes black or green bitumen corrugated sheet and making basic door and window myself. Seems like the bitumen corrugated sheet may make a better job than felting would. Undecided what to clad it in but would prefer wooden shiplap or tongue and groove to the vertical cladding of the plan.

Also i’m not convinced that the “shed on sled” idea will work when it’s full of all my junk though! It would be good if it did as then i may be able to gain access to the fences behind for maintenance.

Anyone know of anywhere that i can download other free plans. If i can’t find off-the-shelf plans i’ll just have to make my own!

Never done any woodwork on this scale or built anything on this sort of scale. Would like to do as much as i can myself but expect i will need help with putting the roof on. If it’s going to cost considerably more than an off-the-shelf shed i may reconsider but i like the idea of building it from scratch and being able to say “I built that”! Don’t intend to actually start building until the summer but thought i’d make most of the winter months for planning it!
