Building a storage shed

I’m hopefully doing the same thing this summer and have not yet finalized the design but this what I do for almost everything I build.

I have scrap boolks, lots of them. About one year before I do a major reno type homey project I start tearing out pictures from magazines that are related to the project at hand. they dont have to be axactly “it”, they just have to contain elements of what I am looking for.

The fireplace in itself is a project. I’m not saying this is for you but “Jamie at Home” is a television program on the food network and he has an outdoor oven/fireplace and its wood fired. I would like my fireplace to be multifunctional. If I am entertaining it would be nice to have an outdoor wood burning fireplace to take the chill from the air on cool seasonal evenings and of course the ambience created from it is a bonus. On the odd occasion I like to BBQ a steak on real charcoal, not gas, and I like the taste of pizza made in a wood fired oven to name just a few. Another hobbyof mine is a “smoker”. I make an exquisite smoked slamon, smoked ribs are to die for as is turkey, beef, and spices flavoured with smoke can have a nice touch and dont let me forget a smoked sausage made into a soup……….I digress.

I need a roof over the whole thing cause I am not much into standing in the rain watching the raindrops wash off my marinades thus the Gazebo. The difference between a gazibo and a pergola, tothe best of my knowledge is that the Gazebo has a roof and a pergola lets the sun shine through the roof but this is somewhat irrelevant.

I collect magazines like “Architectural Digest, Florida Design”, to name just two. Ialsocollect gardening and landscaping books and magazines so when I see a pic I like. I tear it out and paste that in my scrapbook. I take ideas from up to 100 pictures, work those ideas into something I like, into sketches and go from there.

I am not into hastey decisions, especially when its my own home and cottage. I like thinking it through. It also lets me “tweak” the budget so I get most of what I want.

I like big timbers, and stone be it real or faux but I love making a statement. A bold yet somewhat subdued look. Plants ease the Boldish view.

I also think about things like “building codes, building permits, home insurance etc”. I dont want to ever make an insurance claim but in the event I have to, I dont want the insurance company nor the municiplaity to say “Sorry we cant cover that for this reason ?”……..taxes are another concern. Different municipalitieshave different bylaws on how big you can make something without a permit,inspections etc. All things to consider.

The traditonal gazebo is not for the faint of heart, especially with a fireplace. I dont know you so I have no idea of your skill levels. I’ve looked at many jobs that some one else started and it became a nightmare for the owner, been asked to fix it………and wondered “What was this guy thinking?”…..lol.

I’ve scowered the internet for plans and to date………….nodda nothing that appeals to me!
