She said “There’s something in the wood shed” – Bellebouche

Having just about finished all the wood we chopped in previous years, it was time to purchase some more wood to keep us warm for the rest of this winter and for next winter too. Things are not just that simple though. We had to tidy up the right hand barn before re-stocking it full of wood.

When we first moved into Bellebouche, the right hand barn was full of wood, mostly uncut and needing splitting. This wood kept us warm for 3 winters. Once it was all used up the floor of the barn was covered in years worth of bark, sawdust and wood chips.

With face masks at the ready, the floor was brushed and all the bark etc. taken down to the potager. Rather than filling a wheelbarrow and making hundreds of trips, we hooked up our trailer to our drive on mower and did 7 trips in total.

The trailer loads were just dumped in a pile on the potager. We will use it to mulch the newly planted beech hedge, the raised beds, the tayberry and the vine nursery. First, we will have to move the chickens into the paddock permanently, otherwise they will just sctratch the mulch into the lawn and make a major mess.

After the wood detritus was removed, a rough stone floor was revealed.

We ordered a load of wood from a local farmer which was dumped into our padock in one huge pile.

This is all 2 or 3 year old oak. Cut into 50cm lengths, it just needed stacking in the barn and then splitting as and when we use it.

After an afternoon of stacking, with the help of a sack trolley, the piles were finished. It only took me about 4 hours to do it all.
Wood After
The barn looks realy impressive now, full of wonderful wood to burn. Oak is so much better than the poplar we had been burning. We had burnt the 2 massive trailers full of poplar in one winter. Poplar, we discovered, burns quickly and doesn’t provide a really hot fire. Oh well, lesson learnt – all that work, chopping, stacking, moving and restacking and then fetching and burning. Including all the man hours, delivery and heat output – I don’t think we wil be doing any more chopping of poplar.

Now if we can find some free oak trees to chop that will be a different proposition !
