Backyard shed plans Video –
You know a garden shed can be a great addition to any backyard whether it is a nice, large acre lot like these home owners have or even a small 70 by 150 lot. A garden shed will still work in the backyard. In fact, look at this house nestled among the tree line here. This is a piece of the landscaping here in the backyard. It is a great touch to add beauty to your backyard. But you need to do some homework prior to purchasing and installing your garden shed.
First of all, what are you going to use the garden shed for. Strictly for gardening and gardening tools or perhaps storage in the years to come so it maybe a short term and a long term homework process. Also think about what type of restrictions you may have for the garden shed. City restrictions, County restrictions, neighborhood covenants if you are part of an association, there are things that you can and cannot do in your back yard. So do all of that homework first.
When it comes to the sheds, you have all sorts of different options. You can buy metal if you like. But, if you want to paint the metal to match your house you are going to be painting it year after year after year. That is the nature of the base for the metal shed. On the other hand, with a wooden shed like this, this homeowner has painted it to compliment their house and it looks great in the backyard.
What type of shed do I buy? Well, you have options there. You can buy a shed all ready assembled, completely assembled from buildings by Home Centers, from a Lawn Nursery Centers. They will bring that shed assembled on a truck. Back it in vacating your backyards. Set it in place. No questions asked. All you do is start putting stuff in that shed.
Secondly, you can buy a garden shed kit. It comes in components. The four system; the walls, roof trusses, decking, shingles, the whole nine yards. And if you are going to have to do it yourself or you can assemble that yourself, and maybe save some money that way. Or, if you are serious do it yourselfer, why not build it from scratch.
What do you need to remember as far as placement of the shed? Do not place it in a low-lying area where water is going to sit underneath it. That is asking for trouble in years to come. And also you can see the ramp on this particular shed. If you are going to use it for gardening, lawn care, storing your lawn equipment, a ramp is a very handy edition. It makes it so easy to roll the wheel borrows in and out, the lawn equipments in and out too. Budget? That is up to you. Determine what your budget is going to be. Go out and purchase it. And enjoy that garden shed for many, many years to come.

Garden Shed Building Plans
Do you always complain about never having enough space? … Well the reality is that you are not alone, most of us hoard way too much junk, and struggle to find a place to store it all! Maybe that’s why people buy garden storage shed plans?
A storage shed can be used to store just about anything from tools to machinery to simple spillover from the attic or basement. But for most gardeners the garden shed is dedicated to storing gardening equipment, tools and landscaping machines.
So you are looking to get your own dedicated garden shed?
Well there are essentially two choices. You can either purchase a prefabricated model from you local hardware store or you can you can purchase a set of garden storage shed plans and build a shed of your own. In this article we are going to focus on building a shed and how you might save some money by using low maintenance materials.
But first let us take a moment to talk about prefabricated sheds. As you might correctly conclude, these are the most popular kinds of sheds because most homeowners simply do not have the time or the skills to build a shed on their own. More often than not, these sheds are constructed from mediocre timber and they cost between $1500 and $3000.
The main drawback of these units is that there is not alot of choice with regard to size or style. So, if you need a larger or complex style prefab model, you should anticipate paying quite a bit more.
It is also a fact that these units often use substandard building materials, which can and probably will result in wood damage if you live in a harsh, rainy region. When searching for a prefab model, make certain that it is made with pressure treated wood. This will protect against the elements and will likely double the lifespan of your shed.
Garden Storage Shed Plans
The other option, of course, is to use garden storage shed plans to construct a shed on your own. Let us warn you beforehand that this will not be a simple weekend project. You should set aside at least a week to ten days to finish the shed.
Before you start, remember that the materials are the most important part of the project. Sure, good materials may cost a few dollars more, but they will undoubtedly save you time and money on future repairs. They will also as previously mentioned double the lifespan of your shed.
Probably the most popular low maintenance material is PVC trim boards, which can be used in place of painted cedar or pine on parts of the shed that are the most exposed to the elements. This so-called plastic lumber is not only extremely light, but it is also easy to work with. Then of course there is the fact that it is all but impervious to decay, splitting, rotting, warping and even bugs.
I recommend that you visit your local hardware store or search on the internet for a full list of low maintenance building supplies for garden storage sheds. That way you can easily create a budget for this project which will help you decide weather building your own garden storage shed is the right idea for you.

Garden Shed — Backyard Shed
One thing nearly every gardener can use is the storage space provided by a good garden or backyard shed. Tillers, lawn mowers, and snow blowers often get relegated to the back of an already overloaded garage. Hoes, shovels, and rakes get hemmed in by vehicles. Large containers like bushel baskets, half barrels, and wheelbarrows end up wherever there’s space, and frequently hand tools and small pots are lost in the shuffle- and it’s often near impossible to find a matching pair of gardener’s gloves! Good garden and backyard shed designs can solve all of those problems and offer many other benefits besides a place to hang your hoe!
Wide doors provide easy access to tillers, mowers, and snow blowers. Many garden shed designs have cupolas and windows that open for ventilation. Shelves store pots and indoor potting benches give you an easy place to repot your transplants even when it’s raining outside! Drawers store small hand tools, garden plans, and of course, pairs and pairs of gardener’s gloves!
Some garden shed designs combine the utility of extra storage with the delight of every serious gardener, a hobby greenhouse. Windows and skylights give your plants a head start on the season. In addition, a hobby greenhouse is an excellent place to set up a hydroponics or aquaponics system for year round gardening. Many garden sheds also double as art or crafts studios or pool houses.
Many builders specialize in garden shed designs. Hundreds of plans are available on the Internet to download for the do-it-yourselfer or to examine before contacting a builder. Many garden shed builders offer customizable plans and/or totally custom designs. As well as including all the amenities you need inside of your garden shed, the exteriors of garden shed designs can be customized to be a focal point of your garden or subdued to blend in with the architecture of your home and landscape.
The least expensive garden sheds are the prefab plastic or metal backyard sheds you can buy from home improvement centers or garden shops. While not as attractive as custom-designed wooden sheds, modern designs are stylish and the prices start low enough to fit anybody’s budget. Backyard sheds are utilitarian and easy to assemble. What they lack in aesthetic appeal, they make up for in inexpensive, handy storage areas for garden tools and implements. A backyard shed can give you a place to store extra outdoor furniture and tools that would otherwise clutter up your yard or garage.
If you are handy with carpentry, building your own backyard shed can be a fun and interesting project. You can buy designs for backyard sheds from your local lumberyard, find them on the Internet, or simply get ideas from books in your public library. You can even design your own shed and build it from scratch – the most cost-effective way of getting a new shed.
If you lack the confidence to do everything yourself, backyard sheds are available as pre-cut kits from many lumberyards. These kits come with instructions on how to assemble the shed, and all that is needed are simple tools like hammers, screwdrivers and wrenches. You will get the satisfaction of building your own shed and saving money at the same time.
Backyard sheds should have a foundation. The foundation prevents the shed from shifting and protects it from excess exposure to moisture. Foundations for sheds could be a simple concrete slab, or cinder brick exterior wall foundation. Either way, the foundation will not add more than a couple of hundred dollars to the total price of your shed, and it will last much longer.
Once you have your shed in place, you will wonder how you ever managed without it. They are so convenient for storing all kinds of things, you may find it filling up more quickly than you had expected. Uh-oh – maybe you need two backyard sheds!

Backyard sheds add style — and function
Often in North Texas, what ends up a backyard garden shed starts out a harried homeowner’s plea.
“‘Give me back my garage!’ is what most people say when they come see me,” says Scotland Yards owner Garth Beard. Mr. Beard, who builds custom sheds, says with most garages barely holding two cars, tool storage space is typically tight. It’s so tight, in fact, that many homeowners resort to parking in the driveway to make space in the garage.
A backyard shed for tools and equipment – whether it’s fancy or plain – can help solve that storage dilemma. Basic garden sheds are simple structures with wood framing, siding, a roof and a floor. Premium construction materials and the addition of windows, trim and decorative shingles or shakes can turn humble outbuildings into focal points of the landscape.
Deciding which direction to take when buying a shed depends on a number of factors. Among the first considerations are the city requirements and homeowner association rules that apply to a particular location. “Usually a structure up to 120 square feet in size does not require a permit,” says Mr. Beard, whose business is in Lewisville.
“Setbacks also typically apply, requiring a shed to be at least 3 feet from a property line and 5 feet from the house.”
Homeowner associations sometimes require a shed’s roof to match the home’s roof; they sometimes also stipulate a specific facing material be included in the structure, such as requiring half or more of the siding to be made from brick.
After determining what’s permissible for size and location, a homeowner will want to consider the shed’s appearance.
The most economical wood-siding option, and the one that’s used by most builders, is a paintable wood-composite material with a vertical ridge pattern, says Dallas Shed Co. owner Peter Huggler. Horizontal plank siding is another option.
“To make the inside more useful we can add a loft and pull down stairs for more cubic storage space,” Mr. Huggler says. “Skylights and extra windows are also options.”

Those extra interior fittings and trim, the basic construction materials and the labor to put it all together are what drive the price of a backyard shed. Mr. Huggler’s sheds start at around $800, and he says consumers might be surprised to know that custom outbuildings compare favorably in price to the products at the big-box hardware stores and can offer better quality.
“Benefits of building a custom shed include wider overhangs and welded steel door frames that won’t sag,” he says, attributes that aren’t always included in manufactured sheds.
When aesthetics are more important than budget, a homeowner can elevate the look with premium construction materials, such as cedar. These structures can serve as a landscape focal point.
Brian Jewell builds cedar sheds, typically costing from $2,000 to $8,000, and says his shed business grew out of necessity. “I kept seeing metal or plastic boxes in the back yards of historic homes I was renovating,” says Mr. Jewell, who owns Brian Jewell Remodeling in Arlington. “I wanted to offer a unique product with a better look.”
Mr. Jewell encourages his prospective clients to find design inspiration from magazines and not to be scared into thinking your back yard is too small for a shed.
“You can get an amazing amount of use out of an 8-by-8 structure,” he says. He often adds a porch overhang and a built-in work area to his structures to increase utility.
Manufactured sheds of wood are prime candidates for custom flourishes. Rebecca Slugg of Fort Worth sheathed her 12-foot-by-9-foot model in cedar shakes and replaced the standard barn-door opening with salvaged French doors. To hide the lawn and pool equipment stacked within, she painted some of the individual panes of the French doors with opaque craft paint.
It’s a decorative cue she took from buildings in Santa Fe. Where the budget did not allow colored or stained glass, panes were coated, on the inside, with painted jewel tones. To the peaked roof she added a cupola and iron weather vane ordered from Maine.
Several books on sheds published since January feature both their utilitarian and aesthetic qualities. Sunset Books’ Sheds & Garages , Firefly Books’ Sheds: The Do-It-Yourself Guide for Backyard Builders by David and Jeanie Stiles and Stylish Sheds and Elegant Hideaways: Big Ideas for Small Backyard Destinations by Debra Prinzing (Clarkson Potter) all show utilitarian outbuildings that are big on charm.
Both the Sunset publication and the Stiles’ book include plans and elevations for everything from the basic 8-foot-by-10-foot shed made from construction-grade pine and asphalt shingles to a wide selection of more complex and architecturally sophisticated small buildings.
In the Stiles’ book, for instance, there is the timbered Irish garden shed, a Japanese boat shed with shoji doors and Asian-inspired hip roof and a Victorian shed with gingerbread trim.
All three are useful references for the do-it-yourselfer as well as the homeowner seeking inspiration for a custom design.
Foundation: The way in which a shed is attached to the ground can affect property taxes. Sheds attached to the ground in some way, such as with a concrete slab, are considered taxable square footage, says Scotland Yards owner Garth Beard. If a shed sits on runners, it is generally considered a portable building and isn’t taxable.
Location: Early in the planning process, a homeowner must decide whether to try to minimize the visual impact of a shed or make it a focal point. That outcome drives aesthetic choices of materials and trim.
Rules: Homeowner association rules and city permits often govern backyard shed building, depending on a home’s location and the size and type of structure planned.
Cost: Basic wood-composite sheds start around $700. Cost goes up based on factors such as size, materials used, complexity of construction and labor.

New Jersey designer Ken Smith founded Gardensheds Inc. 15 years ago on the principle that outbuildings should be more than just a shed. “Ninety percent of the time the structure is visible in the landscape,” says Mr. Smith. “My mission is to upgrade the lowly status of outbuildings.”
He achieves that with premium craftsmanship and materials. His construction staff are Amish builders trained in traditional techniques. He uses cypress siding, solid mahogany windows with divided lights and cedar roof shingles.
Prices range from $6,000 to $30,000 and average around $11,000. The company ships the structures fully assembled, with delivery fees to the Dallas-area ranging from $1,500 to $2,700 depending on whether shipments can be consolidated with other orders.
