You know a garden shed can be a great addition to any backyard whether it is a nice, large acre lot like these home owners have or even a small 70 by 150 lot. A garden shed will still work in the backyard. In fact, look at this house nestled among the tree line here. This is a piece of the landscaping here in the backyard. It is a great touch to add beauty to your backyard. But you need to do some homework prior to purchasing and installing your garden shed.

First of all, what are you going to use the garden shed for. Strictly for gardening and gardening tools or perhaps storage in the years to come so it maybe a short term and a long term homework process. Also think about what type of restrictions you may have for the garden shed. City restrictions, County restrictions, neighborhood covenants if you are part of an association, there are things that you can and cannot do in your back yard. So do all of that homework first.

When it comes to the sheds, you have all sorts of different options. You can buy metal if you like. But, if you want to paint the metal to match your house you are going to be painting it year after year after year. That is the nature of the base for the metal shed. On the other hand, with a wooden shed like this, this homeowner has painted it to compliment their house and it looks great in the backyard.

What type of shed do I buy? Well, you have options there. You can buy a shed all ready assembled, completely assembled from buildings by Home Centers, from a Lawn Nursery Centers. They will bring that shed assembled on a truck. Back it in vacating your backyards. Set it in place. No questions asked. All you do is start putting stuff in that shed.

Secondly, you can buy a garden shed kit. It comes in components. The four system; the walls, roof trusses, decking, shingles, the whole nine yards. And if you are going to have to do it yourself or you can assemble that yourself, and maybe save some money that way. Or, if you are serious do it yourselfer, why not build it from scratch.

What do you need to remember as far as placement of the shed? Do not place it in a low-lying area where water is going to sit underneath it. That is asking for trouble in years to come. And also you can see the ramp on this particular shed. If you are going to use it for gardening, lawn care, storing your lawn equipment, a ramp is a very handy edition. It makes it so easy to roll the wheel borrows in and out, the lawn equipments in and out too. Budget? That is up to you. Determine what your budget is going to be. Go out and purchase it. And enjoy that garden shed for many, many years to come.

Sheds. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that sheds are a bit of a male thing. I’m not usually controversial and that’s not my intention here but recently we decided that we needed a plain old, run of the mill garden shed.
Right up until we opened discussions about buying a shed, I assumed the process would be straightforward enough and that it would be a quick discussion about what we need, where we’d put it and when we’d get it. Little did I know?

The ensuing discussion and sometimes heated debate would have been more appropriate to solving much bigger issues than the choice of a shed and in defence of my wife, most of the objections came from me!
After much consideration I decided that you just can’t be flippant or light hearted when it comes to choosing a shed.

After countless visits to garden centers and ‘sheds U like’ type emporiums, I concluded that nothing of what was on offer was appropriate, or that any of the sheds we inspected would do justice to our garden.
So the decision was reached that I would build it myself, with much raising of eyes heaven-ward from my wife. In my defense, I only wanted what was best for our garden, and if I was going to be chief shed maintainer, then I wanted a hand in how it looked.
As you might have guessed I had no prior experience and no real idea of how to build a shed, but as ever I was willing and enthusiastic.
A thorough search for shed plans unearthed a fantastic resource that I ended up choosing and after following their instructions to the letter, we were the proud owners of a brand spanking new shed, created by my own hands and with my own added features and signature included.

If I’m honest, I’d say that I am extremely proud of my new shed trying desperately not to sound conceited, but I just love it. Credit where it’s due though, if I wasn’t following a fantastic set of instructions I don’t think I would be shouting about the result.
In searching for a garden shed, I quickly realized how much more they cost than I had visualized, and to be fair, it wasn’t a matter of cost, we (I) just didn’t see a shed that ticked all of our (my) boxes.
Having learned how to build a shed from scratch, I now have no fear whatsoever in building another one.

Ultimately if you find a shed for sale that you like, then buy it, (here, here says my wife!) but if you’re not sure, then consider building it yourself. With some good instructions, you absolutely can build your own shed and believe me, you’ll be glad you did.

Shed plans, 10×12 dimension plans being one of the more popular types that many plans and blueprints are drawn up to guide in the creation of, are the most important of all of your tools in constructing a shed. Downloading files of thousands of plans and blueprints are so simple, and inordinately cheap, too… and downloading so many in one go is best, because there are no “one-size-fits-all” shed designs that would fit everyone’s needs. It’s better to pick and choose from myriads of designs so that you can find precisely what you need in order to suit your exact needs, and locating these on the internet can be a breeze.

10×14 Shed Plans

10×14 is a wonderful size for a storage shed. With 140 square feet of floor space and the generous overhead space afforded by those full height sidewalls and 8×12 pitch, there’s plenty of room for stuff. A roll-up door will allow easy access for everything from sleds to motorbikes.

Nailing down the costs for a shed of this size depends on all the usual factors. Lumber prices fluctuate of course, but you can easily calculate the costs for structural lumber from the take off specifications. You won’t know those numbers until you decide on the shed plans and type of framing. The biggest questions, perhaps, are what kind of roofing and siding will you use and how much will your supplier charge for the overhead door?

If you want a rustic appearance and go with post frame construction, using board and batten siding, you sheath and side in one step. The same goes for good old T-111 plywood … nail it up and you’re done. Overhead door prices can vary widely, depending on your requirements. Will a purely utilitarian door suffice or do you want something a bit more style?
