Woodworking Finish Wood Sanding Basic Techniques
Our basic techniques lesson shows you how to sand wood with success:
1. Go with the Grain
This is one of the easiest rules to remember when sanding. Going against the grain can create visible scratch marks. Pay close attention to a project that has four joined sides. Where the end of one piece meets the edge of another piece, you’ll want to sand right up to the joint without crossing it. Sand the edge last, being careful to sand with the grain.
2. Progress from Coarse- to Fine-Grit Sandpaper
Begin by sanding with the grain with 100-grit sandpaper to remove the deepest scratches from the
wood. Then sand with 150-grit sandpaper for a smooth, uniform surface that will evenly absorb the
paint. For base-coated surfaces, we recommend sanding with paper cut from a plain paper grocery sack before continuing to paint details or applying varnish. This is by far the finest-grit sandpaper around, and it will remove any fuzz raised by acrylic paint without leaving scratches. Be sure to use the plain side of the sack; the ink on the printed side could rub off onto the project surface. You may crumple the bag before using it to make the paper more pliable. If you do, crumple it and then flatten the piece so there are no hard folds or edges.
3. Search for Scratches
Once you complete all sanding, remove the dust with a light sweep of a tack cloth. (Do not rub the
surface with the cloth; you’ll leave a sticky residue.) Then hold a light at an angle over the piece (or place the piece near a window) to inspect it for scratches. Sand again as before until the surface is smooth and scratch-free.
4. Make It Stick
All adhesives bond best to clean, dry, bare wood. Sand painted or varnished parts to expose bare wood in the gluing areas. Then remove dust from the surface, but don’t rub the surface with a tack cloth — the wax residue will prevent an effective bond.Visit the Woodworking Plans Website pages for more woodworking skills info..

Taunton Store – Fine Woodworking Design Book Eight – Scott Gibson
It has been more than a dozen years since Fine Woodworking magazine published Design Book Seven, the most recent in a series that periodically explored contemporary woodworking. As was the case with its predecessors, this last iteration included a little bit of everything — not only chairs and desks and beds but also carvings and sculpture, even a hand-cranked wooden toy. It was a compilation of the best and most imaginative work that came to the attention of editors at Fine Woodworking.
In the interim, The Taunton Press launched and eventually folded Home Furniture, a magazine devoted to furniture design, not construction. Although Home Furniture never quite managed the circulation it needed for long-term survival, its demise left many woodworkers wishing there were more opportunities to look at current work. So, late last year, Fine Woodworking Publisher Anatole Burkin decided the time was right for an updated version of the Design Book series.
There would be several changes between the old series and its offspring, what first became Fine Woodworking Furniture: 102 Contemporary Designs published last fall as a magazine, and now republished in book form as Design Book Eight.
For starters, Design Book Eight is limited to functional furniture, meaning that turnings, sculpture, musical instruments and the like would not be included. How come? We wanted to reach the greatest number of furnituremakers with design ideas that would be useful in their own work. We also decided to limit the collection to contemporary pieces. In making that early decision, we realized we would be excluding the many talented furnituremakers who turn out first-rate period reproductions. Yet we hoped it also would keep the collection more focused and more accessible.
With those loose ground rules in place, we encouraged furnituremakers to send in their best work — and send they did. Once submissions were all in (a half-dozen large cardboard boxes worth) they were reviewed by a group of four: Anatole Burkin; Helen Albert, executive editor of Taunton books; and two former editors at Fine Woodworking, Jonathan Binzen, now a consulting editor, and me. All of us are woodworkers. Jessica DiDonato from the Taunton books staff provided the considerable editorial assistance the project required.
Readers with some of the early Design Books in their libraries may remember that each piece was accompanied by a simple caption listing the basics: name of the maker, name of the piece (if it had one), materials, dimensions. We thought it would be interesting to include more this time so we sent questionnaires to each of the artisans who had been selected and asked them to tell us about themselves, their shops, how they worked and what they had in mind with the design of the piece or pieces we had selected. Their answers were variably rich with detail, painfully short or something in between. But in any case, it was an opportunity for these artists and artisans to explain in their own words such things as how they arrived at a design, why they used a certain kind of wood and what their shops and work schedules are like. It has been an opportunity for us to peer into their creative train of thought. When you see a direct quote from a maker, that’s where it comes from. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is the quality of the work you’ll find in these pages. As you’ll see, there’s still plenty of that.

Make Sure You Use Good Shed Plans When Building Your Own Shed
Is it time for a new shed? Thinking of building your own shed?
Learn How to Build a Garden Shed Yourself! Read On…

Before you start on a project such as building your own shed, you definitely need to do some planning – you need an easy and systematic way of determining your measurements, your material needs, the time required, etc. And you need to know what you will end up with and what it will cost before you get started.
If you enjoy woodworking you know what a big undertaking building a shed can be. You’re aware of the time and effort involved and it never turns out exactly like you planned. You will be overworked, over-budget, and under-finished! And wasn’t this supposed to be fun and enjoyable?
When I recently looked into this, I saw there were dozens of books on the subject. Some had great diagrams and instructions while others were not so good.
What I really needed was one with lots and lots of different types of sheds to choose from (as well as the detailed instructions). I could literally blow my budget on these books just to help me evaluate all the sheds I was looking at.
Of course I couldn’t justify the cost doing that.

Step By Step Diagrams for Hundreds of Sheds
I did check online though and found Garden Shed Designs for literally hundreds of different sheds that I could build. I could download all the plans right away onto my computer for a lot less than buying up some of these books.
Check it out here: Garden Shed Designs and Blueprints. The cost was just $37 – well within my price range.
And it would pay for itself many times over.
Click Here to Check Our Garden Shed Designs!
What was nice was that they included a bonus of 12,000 woodworking projects (once I was done with the shed of course!) All these projects will keep me busy for a long time and I won’t be running out of ideas any time soon!

A Guide to Woodworking Jigs
If you have a woodworking workshop, it is likely that you will need a woodworking jig. Jigs are useful for repetitive tasks in many woodworking projects, and help in making complex tasks quicker and easier. Woodworking jigs are readily available from hardware stores, and are usually very cheap. It is even more cost effective to build your own from scrap wood, and can be beneficial because you can create a jig suited to your specific needs and taste. Depending on the type and amount of projects you like to do, you will need a variety of different jigs.
Different Types of Woodworking Jigs
Dovetail Jigs: Dovetail jigs are useful for building dovetail joints accurately. Dovetail jigs can be purchased at relatively inexpensive prices. You could even build your own dovetail jig using templates from the internet or stores that sell woodworking supplies. If sourced successfully, many of these templates will allow you to make up to twelve different jig sizes.
If you are going to make your own jigs, you may want to purchase a dovetail bit for your router and a dovetail saw. Good templates will assist you in making variably spaced or fixed dovetails for a variety of projects including drawers, cabinets and small boxes.
A dovetail saw is a good purchase, because it need not only be used for cutting dovetails, but can also cut other fine joints for other projects. Dovetail saws have thinner blades which allow for greater accuracy. It is important to purchase good quality tools for a more professional result on your projects. When buying a dovetail saw, look for about fourteen to seventeen points per inch.
Dowel Jigs: A dowel jig is used for making good quality dowels. If you are going to be using thick timber, it is best to use a self-centering jig for better accuracy. There are a variety of sizes available, from a quarter to one half inch. There are complete kits available from woodworking supply shops that include the dowel jig and several hundred dowels in a variety of sizes.
Kreg Jig: Kreg jigs are ideal for cabinet making. Naturally, you will want the movement of the drawers to be smooth, so perfectly positioned slides are imperative. The use of kreg jigs is extremely convenient as you will not need to measure and mark the spaces for the drawer slides. This will make it easier to mount metal drawer slides. Kreg jigs can be used for center, bottom or extension mounted drawers. A kreg jig is an inexpensive, yet extremely versatile piece of equipment.
Building Your Own Woodworking Jigs:
If you build your own woodworking jigs, you will save a lot of money in supplies. You can use inexpensive pieces of material, and scrap wood for making your own jigs. Because you will only be using the jig for one project, you do not want to spend too much money on materials. If you are planning on reusing your jigs, it is advisable to build with a stronger and more durable hardwood. It is easy to source instructions on making your own jigs in woodworking books or magazines. Instructions on making your own jig are also readily available on the internet, and can be printed and stored for future reference.
: Incra ULTRALITESYS Ultra Lite Jig Woodworking System: Home Improvement
I’ve owned one of these for about a year and a half and have cut some beautiful dovetails using this system.
Set-up is easy and explained well by the manual. Incramental adjustments are easy, and the positioner is rock-solid. You have to be very careful, because your stock may want to move in the middle of a cut when clamped to the right-angle feature.
Making dovetails: The templates are easy to follow, but require too many steps to set up. Adjustment and centering of your workpiece is critical, and cutting dovetails by incramental changes in fence position takes just too long if you have more than a couple to cut. I would rather spend the time to hand-cut the dovetails. After my initial few, I haven’t used the dovetail function of this jig.
As a router table fence, this system can’t be beat for the money. For the price of many standard router fences and a little modification, you can have tremendous functionality. The bit hole in the fence is too small, but with the t-slots on the front, you can attatch a second adjustable fence that you can make from MDF and laminate. Using 3″ thick MDF covered with laminate as a second fence, I have even used raised panel bits. The ability to adjust the fence position at will is great. The fence is solid, stable, adjustable and a breeze to use. I tend to measure, but when you get the template guide zeroed in, you can simply set the fence where you want it using scale measurements. I wouldn’t buy this as a dovetail jig alone unless you are VERY patient, but it is well worth its price for use as a router table fence. I use mine at least weekly and wouldn’t trade it for any router fence system out there. I’m currently looking at Keller and Leigh as better dovetail options. Thanks for reading.
