Building a storage shed

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Several thousand people are expected at this weekend’s 19th annual Woodworkers Showcase, billed as the largest event of its kind in the nation.
More than 60 exhibitors will be on hand from throughout the United States, displaying all kinds of fine woodworking from musical instruments to high-end furniture.
The event, set to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Saratoga Springs City Center, will also feature numerous seminars and classes, and a related gathering called “Totally Turning” will have presenters from France, Canada and New Zealand.
“Some shows are just for vendors selling things,” said Ken Evans, event chairman. “We not only have all-day free classes, but there’s also a juried competition in which more than 150 items will be judged in a variety of categories.”
Groupings run the gamut. In furniture alone there are several different categories such as Adirondack furniture, accessories (clocks, mirrors, etc.) and toys/miniatures. Other categories include wood turning, carving and scroll sawing.
“There’s a tremendous range,” said Herm Finkbeiner of Clifton Park, who helped found Northeastern Woodworkers Association, the show’s sponsor. The organization started out with just 18 members and numbers close to 900 now.
The first few shows were held at Curtis Lumber in Ballston Spa, but the showcase quickly outgrew the space there and has been held at the City Center ever since.
Finkbeiner specializes in making wooden models of large trucks. He’ll be displaying a 40-inch-long, 10-inch-high log truck made of black locust with black walnut accents. The project took 50 to 60 hours spread out over three months. His booth will also feature some wooden boxes and a table he made for holding wood when using a drill press.
“I try to do something new each year,” he said. “It’s sort of a challenge to learn how to do things. Now matter how much you learn, there’s always more. I really enjoy looking at other people’s things, too.”
Evans said exhibitors will be on hand from California, Utah and Virginia. Most spectators come from New York and New England and all children will receive a small wooden toy.
“We sent out 6,800 mailers this year,” Evans said.
“Totally Turning” is a separate event for woodworkers who have a special interest in wood turning — making items on a lathe.
The Woodworkers Association is a nonprofit group and has done a great deal of charitable work on behalf of Double-H Hole in the Woods Ranch for critically ill children in Lake Luzerne. “Each year we put together 1,000 kits, with wooden articles that children can work on and put together,” Finkbeiner said.
Woodworkers have also given children a variety of wooden gifts such as CD racks and boxes for them to store keepsakes from their time at camp.
This weekend’s showcase will feature both amateur and professional woodworkers.
